Are there any giant beatles indiginous to the new york state area?

My room mate saw this enormous scarab looking beetle INSIDE OUR APARTMENT with pincers. It was an inch and a half large and looked like it was from a rain forest or somethin. Huge! Now I'm wondering if bugs like that r common around here (troy new York)
